Maj. Philip Wise

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (January 19, 2012) - It's been two years since a Salvation Army Major was gun down on Christmas Eve in front of his three children.

Major Philip Wise was killed on Christmas Eve 2009 in North Little Rock as he was wrapping up Christmas kettles for the year.

Salvation Army officials says that Major Wise had a desire to help young people with an interest in music develop their skills for the purpose of evangelism and worship of God.

In this spirit, the Philip Wise and Richard Brittle Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in honor of Major Wise and Major Richard Brittle who were both Salvation Army officers from Central Arkansas.

It is in their memory that one music scholarship, and one general education scholarship be awarded annually to low-income college students from Central Arkansas. The maximum amount for each scholarship is $1,500.

"The greatest source of income for the fund is a golf tournament," says Major Jim Taylor. "Last year was the first annual golf tournament and we netted about $13,000. And that money has now been deposited into a fund to generate interest and grow."

To qualify for consideration of these scholarships the applicants must:

1. Be a resident of one of the following counties in Arkansas: Pulaski, Lonoke, Saline, or White.
2. Be accepted into a post high school educational institution.
3. Submit a one page essay explaining why they qualify for this scholarship.
4. Essays can be emailed to james_taylor@uss.salvationarmy.org or mailed to the attention of Major Jim Taylor at 1111 West Markham, Little Rock, AR 72201.

The Salvation Army is also accepting donations to the college scholarship fund. Just put "college scholarship" in the memo line and mail to the Salvation Army at the address above.
