LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Jan. 23) -- Parents of students living within the Pulaski County Special School District (PCSSD) must enroll their pre-kindergarten, kindergarten or new students for the 2012-2013 school year during new student registration, which started today, Monday, January 23, will continue through Friday, February 3, 2012.
Additionally, on Thursday, January 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., all schools in the district will host an open house, and parents or guardians may stop in to tour a school and meet personnel.
Brenda Bowles, assistant superintendent for the Office of Equity and Pupil Services for the school district, said where a student registers depends on grade level and type of registration.
"Pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and elementary students will register at the school they will attend. Secondary students must register at regional hub locations (see below for addresses), and Magnet School, Majority-to-Minority transfer students and School Choice permit requests must visit the district's central office at 925 E. Dixon Road in Little Rock," Bowles said.
Bowles said PCSSD has more than 17,000 students in 37 schools throughout Little Rock, West Little Rock, Maumelle, Sherwood and Jacksonville that offer an array of programs and opportunities.
"We have an excellent Specialty Program with schools dedicated to talented and gifted learning," Bowles said. "Added to that are nationally awarded Blue Ribbon schools, some of the best athletic and afterschool activities and clubs and organizations you will find anywhere."
Bowles said the district also offers pre-kindergarten and extended-day programs and foreign languages including Chinese.
Those who must register are new students entering pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, as well as students coming to PCSSD through the Majority-to-Minority (M-to-M) provision allowing transfers among the North Little Rock, Little Rock and PCSSD districts from students in a district where their race is in the majority to enroll at any school in a district where their race is in the minority. They are granted permission on a first-come, first-served basis.
"Additionally, those students looking to transfer in from another district to one of our Magnet Schools, or schools that specialize in specific subjects, also need to register at the district office. So do those wanting to transfer from another district entirely through the School Choice provision," Bowles added.
Bowles encouraged parents to take advantage of the district's open house on January 26. "That really gives you a chance to see your school in action and meet teachers and administrators," she said.
To register a student, Bowles said parents or guardians need to present proper identification, which includes a birth certificate or a registrar statement, baptismal certificate, passport, affidavit, military identification, previous school records, immunization records, transcript or last report card or social security card. Address verification also is necessary, which requires a current utility bill, a Little Rock Air Force Base housing verification form, home purchase closing papers or lease agreements.
