UNDATED (CNN) -- More people may be dying from malaria than previously thought. That's coming from a new study published in the Lancet.

Researchers poured through data on malaria deaths from 1980 to 2010. They found more than 1.2 million people died from the disease in 2010. That is almost double what the World Health Organization estimated.

Researchers found that most of the deaths occurred in Africa. But, they say the number of people dying from the disease there is down 30 percent since 2004.

They say international aid likely played a big role in that decrease.
