LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Fourteen Arkansas counties could lose more than $1 million in federal funds for road projects this year after the state missed a deadline to request the money.

The state treasurer's office said Friday that it learned over the past two weeks that the U.S. Forest Service rejected the counties' request for the funds, which will go primarily toward the road projects in the counties, after the state missed a Sept. 30 deadline. Members of Arkansas' congressional delegation said they're talking with the federal agency in the hopes of restoring the money toward the counties.

Chief Deputy Treasurer Debbie Rogers says the state was notified in October that it had missed the deadline, and submitted the request after initially being told it could still apply.
