PINE BLUFF, Ark. (KTHV) -What started out as a response to a fire turned into a murder investigation. Firefighters showed up to the apartment complex at 2121 South Poplar around 3:30 Friday morning.
They found the door ajar and went inside, to find a pot on the kitchen stove caught fire. That's when they noticed a woman's body.
Officers believe the victim, 39 year old Shirley Owney, was cooking when suspect- Kevin McMiller allegedly stabbed her to death. They don't think he set the fire to cover the crime.
Police followed a blood trail outside and say they discovered McMiller holding the woman's 16-year-old daughter hostage in an abandoned house about 2 blocks from the apartment. "Negotiators were able to talk to them and get a dialogue going and was able to get them out without any further injuries."
Lt. Bob Rawlinson with the Pine Bluff police department also says officers recovered a knife on McMiller and says that's what he used to kill the woman. Neighbors declined to go on camera, but did tell me McMiller used to date the daughter.
This is Pine Bluff's fifth homicide for 2012.
