WARSAW, Poland (CNN) -- Tens of thousands of Polish citizens gathered at the fountain park of Warsaw's Old Town on Thursday to celebrate Poland's National Day as well as the coming European Championship in June.
Last summer, the fountain park saw more than 500,000 visitors. This year, the musical fountain's football-themed shows are expected to attract even more fans worldwide.
The National Day fountain performance started at 21:00 on Thursday night, playing the theme song of the European Football Championship. The show's audience was amazed by the 3D images in the fountain.
Projected by laser beams, an image of Warsaw's football stadium, one of the European Championship 2012 venues, filled the fountain. Accompanied by music and light effects, the fountain displayed the story of a boy pursuing his football dreams.
"We'll be here to support our team, and that's the most important part. We came from Szczecin and will stay here for nine days. The fountain performance is beautiful and amazing," said a football fan.
The show marked the first 3D fountain performance in Europe.
During the European Championship in June, citizens and fans will be able to enjoy 17 evening multimedia fountain performances at for free.
The local government is also planning to create an artificial beach along the downtown area of the Vistula River so that local citizens can enjoy the sunshine. A number of other special activities are also in the works for the month of May in order to welcome the European Championship.
